Targets 99
QB TB FB WR TE OT OL DT DE LB SF CB AT K

This information is culled from a variety of sources, including Phil Grosz's Blue White Illustrated, other recruiting pages, high school coaches, and lots of e-mails. Unless otherwise noted, we have no way of knowing how serious Penn State is about any particular recruit.

The number of scholarships available is always difficult to define. It is dependent on a number of factors that may or may not occur between now and February 1999. As of March, 1998, it appears that PSU will have between 12 to 16 available scholarships for the '99 recruiting class.

This list was created in March, 1998, and will be updated throughout the recruiting year. For the first several months of the recruiting cycle, it is very difficult to clarify whether a player's top schools are the schools that HE would like to attend, or are the schools that are actually recruiting him. In addition, it is not always clear what position a prospect is projected to play in college. As such, don't be surprised if prospects are frequently moved around on the Targets page during the spring/summer of '98.

Players will be added or removed as information becomes available. In addition, the writeup on each player will be modified as the situation warrants.

PLEASE NOTE: The information contained below does not come from any member of the PSU coaching staff, and does not represent the opinions of the PSU staff. We do our best to try and verify the information, but since we don't talk to the prospects or the PSU coaches, we make no claims as to the accuracy of the information.

Players are listed alphabetically, by position -- not by rank or PSU priority.

Quarterbacks

PSU will try and land one QB for the '99 class.

Tailback

PSU will probably seek to land one tailback in the '99 class.

    1. Paul Arnold, RB/CB, 6' 1", 210 lbs., 4.5 sec. forty, Seattle, WA. Phil Grosz reports that Paul is a friend of current Lion, Mac Morrison. Phil also reports that Paul plans to make PSU one of his official visits. Bill Kurelic has reported that despite playing only 4.5 games as a junior, due to a sprained ankle, Paul ran for over 700 yards, and had five INTs. As of 12/98, it appears that PSU is no longer recruiting Paul. VERBALLED TO WASHINGTON.
    2. Daniel Davis, RB/DB, 5' 11", 207 lbs., Stafford, VA. Rated the #1 prospect in Virginia by Doug Doughty, of the Roanoke Times. Has been a star since his sophomore season, when he ran for 2,450 yards and 19 touchdowns. Attended PSU's summer football camp after his sophomore season, and was voted the most valuable offensive and most valuable defensive player during one of the sessions. Attended a PSU game during the '97 season. Early reports have him looking at PSU, tOSU, UNC, Michigan, and UVA. Daniel attended PSU's '98 Blue-White game. 6. Eric Lockhart, RB, 6' 1", 230 lbs., 4.5 sec. forty., New York, NY. Eric is originally from NYC, but has spent the past two years at Dixie Junior College in Utah. At Dixie JC, he rushed for 623 yards and 12 TD in five game in '98. He's visited ASU, Syracuse, and MSU, and according to Phil Grosz, he's visiting PSU on the weekend of 1/15. Phil later reported that PSU's admissions had problems with some of the courses Eric took at Dixie JC, and as a result, PSU stopped recruiting Eric.
    7. Nick Maddox, RB, 6' 0", 190 lbs., 4.4 sec. forty, Kannapolis, NC. Rated by many as the top RB prospect in the country. As a junior, he rushed for over 2,000 yards and 45 TDs. Is being recruited by virtually every major program in the country. Nick has been pretty coy about his favorites. It is expected that he'll select his top 10 schools in Sept. '98, and cull the list to five schools in Dec. '98. There are some indications, in late August '97, that PSU will make the cut for the top 10. Phil Grosz reports that PSU has offered Nick a scholarship. As of 12/98, it appears that PSU is no longer recruiting Nick. VERBALLED TO FLORIDA STATE.
    8. T.J. Phillips, RB/LB, 6' 2", 210 lbs., 4.5 sec. forty, Sharon, PA. One of the top prospects in PA. Early reports have PSU and FSU at the top of his list. Rated one of the top 50 prospects in PA by Phil Grosz. There are questions about T.J.'s academics, and as of 9/98, it does not appear that PSU is recruiting him. VERBALLED TO KENT STATE.

Tight End

PSU landed two TEs in the '97 class, and one TE in the '98 class. As such, is appears that PSU will be very selective about the TEs that they recruit, and at most will recruit only one for '99.

Was the Ohio Division III Devensive player of the year, according to OFS -- a publication that rates him as the #21 prospect in Ohio. Linebacker

It appears that PSU will try to sign one or two LBers for the '99 class.

    1. T.J. Duckett, LB, 6' 3", 240 lbs., 4.6 sec. forty, Kalamazoo, MI. In their preliminary look at junior prospects, the National Recruiting Advisor rated T.J. as the #1 prospect in the country. Is an outstanding athlete, as he set the Michigan state record in the shot put as a sophmore, ran the second leg of the state champion 4x100-meter relay team at the same meet, and reportedly bench presses 435 lbs. His older brother, Tico, attended Michigan State, and most gurus feel they are the leader for his services. As of 11/98, T.J. often mentions PSU as one of the "other" schools he is considering, but it appears that PSU is out of the running for his services. VERBALLED TO MICHIGAN STATE.
    2. Matt Farrior, LB, 6' 2", 215 lbs., 4.6 sec. forty, Ettrick, VA. Rated the #2 prospect in Virginia by Doug Doughty, of the Roanoke Times, in his preliminary list of '99 prospects. His brother, James, attended UVA, and currently plays for the N.Y. Jets. Matt is reported to be as good a prospect as his brother was at this point in his career. Many feel that UVa. has the inside track, but Phil Grosz has indicated that Matt has PSU in his top three. Phil reports that Matt attended PSU's '98 summer football camp, and that PSU has offered him a scholarship. Matt visited PSU, unofficially, for the MSU game, and will visit officially in January '99. VERBALLED TO FLORIDA.
    3. Jarritt Green, LB, 6' 4", 225 lbs., 4.6 sec. forty, Hampton, VA. Rated the #4 prospect in Virginia by Doug Doughty, of the Roanoke Times, in his preliminary list of '99 prospects.
