This information
is culled from a variety of sources, including Phil Grosz's Blue
White Illustrated, other recruiting pages, high school coaches,
and lots of e-mails. Unless otherwise noted, we have no way of knowing
how serious Penn State is about any particular recruit.
The number of
scholarships available is always difficult to define. It is dependent on
a number of factors that may or may not occur between now and February
1999. As of March, 1998, it appears that PSU will have between 12 to 16
available scholarships for the '99 recruiting class.
This list was
created in March, 1998, and will be updated throughout the recruiting year.
For the first several months of the recruiting cycle, it is very difficult
to clarify whether a player's top schools are the schools that HE would
like to attend, or are the schools that are actually recruiting him. In
addition, it is not always clear what position a prospect is projected
to play in college. As such, don't be surprised if prospects are frequently
moved around on the Targets page during the spring/summer of '98.
Players will be
added or removed as information becomes available. In addition, the writeup
on each player will be modified as the situation warrants.
PLEASE NOTE:
The information contained below does not come from any member of the PSU
coaching staff, and does not represent the opinions of the PSU staff.
We do our best to try and verify the information, but since we don't talk
to the prospects or the PSU coaches, we make no claims as to the accuracy
of the information.
Players are listed
alphabetically, by position -- not by rank or PSU priority.
Quarterbacks
PSU will try and
land one QB for the '99 class.
- Kevin Fant,
QB, 6' 3", 185 lbs., Moss Point, Miss. Kevin is rated by most gurus
as one of the top QB prospects in the country. According to Phil Grosz,
Kevin passed for 1,723 yards and 22 TDs as a junior. Phil also reports
that Kevin will attend PSU's '98 summer football camp. VERBALLED TO
MISSISSIPPI STATE.
- C. J. Leak,
QB, 6' 4", 220 lbs., 4.5 sec. forty, Charlotte, NC. As a senior, C.
J. passed for 2,420 yards and 28 TDs. For his career, C. J. passed for
5,586 yards. C. J. is reportedly a great student, as he's a member of the
National Honor Society. PSU is a late entrant into the Leak derby.
Phil Grosz reports that C. J. will be visiting PSU on 1/15/99, though it
turned out that C. J.'s visit was postponed until 1/22/99. VERBALLED
TO WAKE FOREST.
- Chris Simms,
QB, 6' 4", 203 lbs., Franklin Lakes, NJ. Chris is the son of former
NFL quarterback Phil Simms. Some recruiting gurus consider him the #1 prospect
in the country. As a junior, he completed 94 of 156 passes, for 1,897 yards
and 22 touchdowns. He helped lead his team, Ramapo, to the North Jersey
Section I, Group III state championship. Chris has started since his freshman
season. In his three HS seasons, he's thrown for 4,916 yards and 45 TDs.
Chris attended PSU's summer football camp after his sophomore season. Attended
a PSU home game during the '97 season. Phil Grosz, of G&W Recruiting,
indicates that as of 2/98, Chris has narrowed his selection to PSU, Notre
Dame, FSU, Miami, and possibly tOSU. By 4/98, Phil reports that Miami is
out of it, and FSU is fading, but Michigan has entered the fray. All of
the aforementioned schools have offered him a scholarship. It does not
appear that he will verbal until taking official visits to the aforementioned
schools, though there is conflicting reports about this. Phil reports that
Chris attended PSU's Junior Day on March 28. As of 5/98, Phil Grosz and
other gurus are reporting that PSU is huge leader for Chris' services,
and that tOSU is the only college still under consideration. Phil also
reports that Chris will attend tOSU's summer football camp. As of 6/98,
Phil reports that Chris has dropped tOSU from consideration, and he
won't be attending their camp. (Oops, once again Chris has changed his
mind. As of 6/18, Phil reports that Chris once again plans to attend the
tOSU camp.) Unfortunately, Phil also reports that Chris is showing some
interest in Texas. As of 12/98, Phil Grosz reports that Chris will be visiting
PSU, officially, for the weekend of 12/11. VERBALLED TO TEXAS.
- Chris Stephens,
QB, 6' 3", 205 lbs., Gainesville, FL. Recruiting guru Bill Buchalter
reports that Chris passed for over 3,000 yards, and 34 TDs, during the
past two years. Bill also reports that Chris' father, Jimmy Stephens, is
the OL coach at Florida. Phil Grosz has indicated that Chris will be visiting
PSU. VERBALLED TO FLORIDA.
Tailback
PSU will probably
seek to land one tailback in the '99 class.
- Paul Arnold,
RB/CB, 6' 1", 210 lbs., 4.5 sec. forty, Seattle, WA. Phil Grosz reports
that Paul is a friend of current Lion, Mac Morrison. Phil also reports
that Paul plans to make PSU one of his official visits. Bill Kurelic
has reported that despite playing only 4.5 games as a junior, due to a
sprained ankle, Paul ran for over 700 yards, and had five INTs. As of 12/98,
it appears that PSU is no longer recruiting Paul. VERBALLED TO WASHINGTON.
- Daniel Davis,

offensive and most valuable defensive player during one of the sessions.
Attended a PSU game during the '97 season. Early reports have him looking

visited ASU, Syracuse, and MSU, and according to Phil Grosz, he's visiting

PSU stopped recruiting Eric.

as the top RB prospect in the country. As a junior, he rushed for over
2,000 yards and 45 TDs. Is being recruited by virtually every major program
in the country. Nick has been pretty coy about his favorites. It is expected
that he'll select his top 10 schools in Sept. '98, and cull the list to
five schools in Dec. '98. There are some indications, in late August '97,
that PSU will make the cut for the top 10. Phil Grosz reports that PSU
has offered Nick a scholarship. As of 12/98, it appears that PSU is no
longer recruiting Nick. VERBALLED TO FLORIDA STATE.
- T.J. Phillips,
RB/LB, 6' 2", 210 lbs., 4.5 sec. forty, Sharon, PA. One of the top
prospects in PA. Early reports have PSU and FSU at the top of his list.
Rated one of the top 50 prospects in PA by Phil Grosz. There are questions
about T.J.'s academics, and as of 9/98, it does not appear that PSU is
recruiting him. VERBALLED TO KENT STATE.
Fullback
PSU will probably
seek to land one fullback (or two tailbacks) in the '99 class.
- Kerry Carter,
6' 1", 235 lbs., Canada. Is considered the top prospect in Canada.
PSU, tOSU, Nebraska, Michigan, and Michigan State are believed to be the

lbs. Lastly, OFS indicates that Jesse has camped at PSU, tOSU, and Michigan,
and also visited those three schools, unofficially. Phil Grosz, of G & W Recruiting,
reports that Jesse lists PSU, tOSU, and UM as his top three schools. OFS
says that as of 2/98, tOSU and UM, as well as Illinois, have offered him
a scholarship. As of 5/98, it appears that PSU is slipping out of contention
for Jesse. VERBALLED TO OHIO STATE.
- Thomas Tapeh,
FB, 6' 2", 215 lbs., 4.5 sec. forty, St. Paul, MN. PSU looked to be
involved with him in the Spring of '98, but as of 6/98, it appears that

that he is one of two prospects that PSU is recruiting in Tennessee. Phil

football camp. AllianceSports reports that Ricky ran for 1,371 yards as
a junior. Alliance also reports that Ricky is fully qualified, and that
he has earned enough credits to graduate from high school in 1/99. As of

attended PSU's summer football camp after his freshman year. Unfortunately,
Grant appears to have DE size, while he's built like a DT. As such, it
is unclear how much interest PSU has in him. Grant attended a PSU home
game during the '97 season. As of 12/98, it appears that PSU has not been
recruiting Grant for quite some time. VERBALLED TO MICHIGAN.

the May film evaluation period, and some gurus now consider him one of
the top three def. line prospects in the country. Phil Grosz rates him
as the #1 DL prospect in the country. Has attracted attention from a slew
of colleges, including PSU. Early reports had him favoring in-state colleges,
but as of 10/98, it appears that South Carolina and Clemson are out of

test score.) However, as of 8/98, Phil reports that Raheem raised his score
in his latest attempt, and that PSU is back in the hunt for Raheem. In
10/98, Phil Grosz reported that Raheem's academics were still lacking,
and as such, PSU was not recruiting him. VERBALLED TO RUTGERS.
