Welcome to the PSU Football E-mail Service!
You are to be congratulated for locating,
and joining, a large group of Penn State cyber-nuts. We hope that
in the coming weeks you will come to enjoy this service as much
as those that own it and subscribe to it do.
It is possible that you didn't mean
to join the service, or you find that it is not what you had expected.
If that is the case, or if for any other reason you ever want
to remove yourself from this mailing list, send the following
command in e-mail to "LISTSERVER@PLOTIT.COM":

SECTION I: OUR LIST: THINGS YOU MUST
KNOW
(1) INTRODUCTION: Welcome to the PSU
Football E-mail Service, which we humbly believe is the best source
on the Internet for news, notes, rumors, predictions, analysis,
recruiting, etc. for Penn State football. This list is owned and
maintained by Scott P. Eisensmith, '76.
(2) SUBSCRIPTION FEE: This list is offered
free for the first two weeks. To maintain your subscription
after the trial period, you must send a check or money order for
at least $35 to:
Scott P. Eisensmith
PO Box 669
Haslett, MI 48840
When you send your contribution, please
include a note that lists your e-mail address. Without this information,
you will not be credited for a payment, and will be deleted from
the list after two weeks.
The suggested annual contribution of
$35 will go directly to defraying ISP fees, and hardware/software
costs. Additional donations above the suggested fee of $35 will
be accepted and appreciated. Please note that this fee is non-refundable.
(3) HOW TO SUBSCRIBE/UNSUBSCRIBE: To
participate you will need to subscribe to the mailing list. To
subscribe to the PSU Football Mail List Service, simply send an
e-mail to:
LISTSERVER@PLOTIT.COM
In the body of the message type:
SUBSCRIBE PSUFOOTBALL "Your Name"
Substitute "Your Name" with
your real name. Please do not put anything else in the message.
Also, please note that the subject (or title) of the message should
be blank.
To Unsubscribe, again send a note to
LISTSERVER@PLOTIT.COM and in the body of the message type:
UNSUBSCRIBE PSUFOOTBALL
Once again, please do not put anything
else in the message, or a subject or title on the message.
PLEASE NOTE: Occasionally e-mailboxes
will fill up, domain names will change, connections will go down,
or what have you. In those cases, reject messages will begin
to pour into the administrator's mailbox, or worse, into the list
itself. Therefore, the administrator may have to unsubscribe someone
for technical reasons and, for those same technical reasons, be
unable to notify the person he unsubscribes.
So, if you find that you have stopped
receiving e-mail via the mailing list, this may have happened
to you. If that is the case, just resubscribe yourself to the
mailing list, using the procedures described above.
(4) HOW TO POST: To send a message to
every current PSU Mail List subscriber, just send e-mail to:
PSUFOOTBALL@PLOTIT.COM.
This is called "Posting to the
mail list" because you send mail to a single address and
LISTSERVER makes copies and sends it to all subscribers. The PSUFOOTBALL@PLOTIT.COM
address is also known as the "List address." You must
never try to send any commands to that address (like subscribe,
unsubscribe, etc.), as your message will be distributed to all
subscribers. All commands should be sent to the "LISTSERVER
address", LISTSERVER@PLOTIT.COM.
It is very important to understand the
difference between the two addresses, but fortunately it's not
complicated. The LISTSERVER address is like a fax machine and
the list address is like a normal phone number. If you make a
fax call to someone's home number by mistake, it will be an unpleasant
experience for them, but you'll probably be forgiven the first
time. If you do it regularly, however, he will probably get upset
and send you a nasty complaint. It is the same with mailing lists,
except that you may be annoying hundreds or even thousands of
people at the same time.
So keep in mind: If you want your message
to go to everyone, send it to PSUFOOTBALL@PLOTIT.COM. If you want
to give LISTSERVER a command (subscribe, unsubscribe, etc.) send
it to LISTSERVER@PLOTIT.COM.
(5) SCOPE: Although the primary subject
of discussion is the exploits of the PSU football team, all PSU
sports-related subjects are welcome. In addition, since Penn
State is a world-class academic institution as well as a sports
power, don't be surprised if we occasionally digress into non-sports
topics. Before hitting the "send" button to post a message,
ask yourself, "Will anyone care?"
(6) TOPICS: Intelligent discussion of
relevant topics (noted above) is welcome. The more who participate
in the active conversation, the more fun and informative this
list becomes.
However (and it's a shame this even
needs to be said), obscenity and personal attacks are not welcome.
It's OK to disagree (Oh, boy, do we all disagree sometimes!),
but don't make it personal. In addition, please remember that
these are young men out there playing a game. Win or lose, life
goes on.
Also, please refrain from having one-on-one
conversations in the general forum. (E.g., conversations like
"Hey, Bob Smith, did you know Joe Blow when you were in school?",
where the rest of us don't really care, are frowned upon.) This
does not mean you can't send a message to "Bob Smith;"
just don't send it to him and everyone else.
Finally, like any conversation, it's
a good idea to just "listen" to the posts for a bit
before posting for the first time. You'll get a flavor for what
the current topics are and who everyone is. When you're ready,
we'll welcome you with open arms!

(5) HISTORY: This list was originally
started by Glenn MacMillen. One snowy day in February, his list
crashed and left hundreds of homeless folks wandering the 'net
in search of their daily dose of Penn State football. A brave
soul stepped in and resurrected the list on a university server
as a temporary "stop-gap" measure, until Glenn got
his list going again. That never happened, and then Scott left
his university job and didn't have access to the university server.
So the list needed to be moved from the university server to a
private setup. Scott Eisensmith gathered contributions
during the summer of '96 and purchased their own server and necessary
hardware/software to keep the list alive. In spite of a number
of grumblings about "everything should be free", enough
folks contributed to make the current list a reality. It is usually
easy to get folks to contribute toward the ISP charges during
the football season, but when the season is over many folks leave
the list and contributions dwindle. That makes it very difficult
to keep the list going during the non-football season. Therefore,
we encourage you to contribute your share if you find this list
to be enjoyable and informative! We assure you that no one is
making any money off the psufootball list. Current contributions
don't cover the ongoing monthly ISP charges.

SECTION III: NETIQUETTE
These are the netiquette guidelines
that have been established for this mailing list/newsgroup.
Like society in general, we need to
encourage each other to follow our forum's "rules."
If someone goes out of bounds, politely tell him/her so in a
private e-mail. These aren't *my* rules, they're *our* rules.
It's *not* just up to me -- it's up to you.
*Guidelines for Participating in the
PSU Football Mailing List*
The following comes from a wide variety
of sources, including some of our forum's participants. If you
have any suggestions for additional points, please send them to
Scott Eisensmith at <spe@plotit.com>.
1) Read the FAQ. It's what we use
to operate.
2) It is a good practice to read this forum for a couple weeks before posting for the first time. That way, you:
- learn who the participants are
- don't ask the same questions that have already been asked 50 times before
- find out the current topics of conversation
3) Sign your posts. Whether you use
your real name or a synonym doesn't matter, as long as you use
the same signature consistently. It lets us know who is saying
what.
4) If you're replying to someone's
post, please include enough of the original post so that we can
determine what you are talking about. At a minimum, "quote"
the original post by:
- including the original poster's name/handle
at the top of your post (e.g., "CV Kevin wrote:"); and
- marking the quoted section with ">"
signs so we which are your words and which are not.
5) No advertising in this forum. No
ticket scalping.
6) No flaming. Interesting discussions
regarding differences of opinions, yes; flames, no. If someone
does flame, *don't* flame back via the Mail List -- we don't want
to read it. If you must flame back, send a private e-mail.
7) If we receive an offensive post
from someone who backs another school (it *will* happen again,
trust me), ignore it. Don't make it worse with 10 more "oh,
yeah?" posts back to the forum. If you want to respond,
take it off line. Any witty comebacks you might think of posting
to everyone have already been posted before, so don't.
8) If we're spammed don't make it worse
by commenting on it to everyone on the List. Forward the spam
to the postmaster where the spam came from, then forget about
it. If everyone does this, we'll keep the noise level down, and
maybe even get the spammer booted off the Net.
9) If you're having a private conversation,
use private e-mail. This would include posts like "Hey, does
anyone know so-and-so? Tell him I said Hi!" or "So,
what are you doing this weekend?" Use good judgment and don't
bore us all with your personal life.
10) If someone is not being a good citizen
of the forum, let him/her know by private e-mail. Be gentle the
first time, it might be a newbie. If you wish, send a copy of
these guidelines.
11) Make it clear from the subject header
what sport or other subject area you are talking about. Try to
avoid subjects like "Big News!" or "what do we
do now?" or "<none>". The best way to go
about this is by listing the sport/area you are talking about.
Examples of appropriate subject
lines:
Football: JoePa Renewed
WBball: Team Tops Minnesota <---that's women's basketball
Men's Hoops: Pistol Pete named AA
Politics: PSU Alum is Big Man in Congress
On Campus: Pepsi, Nike new
PSU sponsors
