PENN STATE'S FIRST TEAM ALL AMERICANS AND HALL OF FAMERS BY POSITION

Notes:

1.Before the early 1960s many of the All Americans played both ways. Where something is known about a player excelling on offense or defense, I assigned them to a position on that side of the ball. Sometimes I had to guess.

2. At quarterback, Shorty Miller and Glen Killinger are listed as quarterbacks, but they played at a time when the position was a lot different than T-formation qbs now. Shorty held some rushing records for a long time, but doesn't show up on passing charts. He may have been a quarterback in a short-punt or what we today call a shotgun formation. Killinger, however, doesn't show up in any rushing or passing summaries. He may have been a quarterback in a single wing formation where the quarterback lines up behind a guard, calls signals and serves as a blocking back for the tailback and fullback who receive the snap directly. The Mike part of Mike/Coma Man fame actually played against some single wing teams in high school.

3. Fullback Pete Mauthe was one of the great place kickers of his era and may have been an All American kicker if they had had one then.

4. Former Lion OG Mike Munchak is considered a lock for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

5. Great Paterno-era players who seemed to deserve first team All American recognition, but mysteriously didn't get it include: Brad Benson, OT; Todd Blackledge, QB; Gary Hayman, WR/KR; Bill Lenkaitis, C; Lance Mehl, LB; Mickey Shuler, TE; Steve Smear, DT; David Sxott, OG; Bob White, DE; Leo Wisniewski, NT .
